According to Nielsen Online, 74.1% of the total U.S.
population was online as of August 2009. This is
a remarkable figure of about 228 million internet users out
of total population of about 307 million. Of course,
the total population includes all ages from 1 to 110, so
realistically, it is easy to say that almost everyone who
can afford a computer and internet service is currently
online.

When Web-Tech Online Magazines
started GreaterGardner.net (GardnerMagazine.com) and
MonadnockRegion.net in 2000, most internet usage was dialup.
Now almost all internet usage in Massachusetts and New
Hampshire is via high-speed broadband. The
NTIA released
this document in 2007 showing state by state usage.
In Massachusetts, broadband usage overall is almost 95
percent. In New Hampshire broadband usage is slightly
less. Internet usage has grown even more since the
above document was released.

Content
sites such as our Online Magazines take 42% of online users
internet time, up 24% since 2003. Communications
such as email or instant messaging is down to 27% from a
high of 46% in 2003, while Community sites like MySpace and
Facebook take 13% of total online time. Commerce has
remained relatively stable as a share of time at 13%.
Search has increased from 3% of time in 2003 to 5% of time
in 2009.
